Names and Attributes of the Quran – Part 1

 Allah the God Almighty has mentioned in the Quran almost fifty different names and attributes for it. This is a unique feature of the Quran, it is not usual to find a book describing itself with so many different titles. These names point out qualities and functions of The Quran, they also indicate the importance and greatness of the Quran.  We will discuss few of these names with one verse from the Quran mentioning that name.

1.      Al-Quran: The Quran 17:88

This is the generic name of the Quran, we all Quran by this name. This name has been mentioned seventy-three times in Quran[i]

Say, “If mankind and the jinns come to gather to produce the like of this Qur’an, they could not produce the equal of it, even if they were to assist each other.” 17:88

 

2.     Al-Kareem:  Honorable, Noble

Allah (SWT) has honored Quran by swearing that it is a noble book. Quran contains noble teaching and invites a person to be noble.  

Then I swear by the setting of the stars, And indeed, it is an oath great – if you could know. Indeed, it is a noble Quran 56:75-77

 

3.     Al-Majeed: Glorious, Exalted 

Quran is exalted because it is the speech of Almighty, who is Exalted Himself.  

But this is a Glorious Quran, [Inscribed] in a Preserved tablet. 85:21-22

 

4.    Al-Adheem: Great, Magnificent 

And We have certainly given you, [O Muhammad], seven of the often repeated [verses] and the great Qur’an.  15:87

 

5.    Al-Aziz: Mighty – invincible  

(Something that cannot be defeated), also Honored or revered, also means something precious and valuable.

Quran is form Allah who is very strong and revered, for that reason Quran is precious and valuable. Allah made this Quran a mighty and protected book. Another meaning of Azeez is the one who cannot be defeated, that way Qur’an is invincible, no one can defeat the Quran about the truths mentioned in it.  

And indeed, it is a mighty Book. 41:41  

Quran is safeguarding from Shaitan, Quran cannot be corrupted (invincible), because Allah has promised security of the Qur’an (15:9)

 

6.    Al-Hakim: The Wise, The judge 10:1, 31:2   

Qur’an is called Hakim because it is full of wisdom and it judges between right and falsehood, permissible and prohibited.

These are verses of the wise Book. 31:2  

Mankind was [of] one religion [before their deviation]; then Allah sent the prophets as bringers of good tidings and warners and sent down with them the Scripture in truth to judge between the people concerning that in which they differed.2:213   

Alif, Lam, Ra. These are the verses of the wise Book. 10:1

 

7.      Al-Huda: Guidance:   2-2, 2:97, 2:185, 5:46, 6:154, 10:57, 31:3

This name describes the core function of the Qur’an. Qur’an is revealed for the guidance of all mankind.  

This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah -2:2

As guidance and mercy for the doers of good. 31:3

 

8.    Al-Haqq: The (absolute) Truth:  6:66, 11:17, 28:48, 39:41, 69:51 

The Qur’an is absolute truth from Allah (SWT), so there is no doubt the facts mentioned in it.

But your people have denied it (the Qur’an) while it is the truth. Say, “I am not over you a keeper.” 6:66

So be not in doubt about it. Indeed, it is the truth from your Lord, but most of the people do not believe. 11:17  

And indeed, it is the truth of certainty. 69:51

 

9.    Ash-Shifa: Cure:  10:57, 17:82, 41:44,  

Quran is the cure for diseases of the heart, like doubt about God, hypocrisy, jealousy, malice, pride, arrogance, greed and so on. 

“O mankind! There has come to you a good advice from your Lord, and a healing for the (sicknesses) of the heart – a guidance and mercy for the believers.” 10:57

And We send down of the Quran that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss. 17:82  

Say, “It is, for those who believe, a guidance and cure.” 41:44

 

10.        Al-Mubin: Very clear:   15:1, 26:2, 27:1  

Quran makes very clear statements about complex questions.  

Alif, Lam, Ra. These are the verses of the Book and a clear Quran.15:1  

These are the verses of the clear Book.26:2  

Ta, Seen. These are the verses of the Quran and a clear Book. 27:1  

 

11.  Al-Kitaab: The Book     2:2, 2:44, 2:78, 3:3, 3:7  

This name has been mentioned in the Quran seventy-seven times.

This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah -2:2  

He has sent down upon you, [O Muhammad], the Book in truth, confirming what was before it. And He revealed the Torah and the Gospel. 3:3  

It is He who has sent down to you, [O Muhammad], the Book; in it are verses [that are] precise – they are the foundation of the Book – 3:7
