Six Articles of Faith

Islam specifically mentions six articles of faith regarding God – Allah. All Muslims must have full faith in all of these articles, lack of full faith in any one of them will not make faith complete and a person will not be considered as a Muslim.

1 Oneness of God

The very first principle of Islam, a Muslim must acknowledge is that “there is no one worthy of worship except God- Allah and that Muhammad is His messenger and servant”. Only a true and strong acceptance of this belief makes a person Muslim.

This article of Islam emphasizes belief in the Oneness of God. No one is worthy of worship except God. No one equals Him in any manner, nor shares His Power and Authority. He is All Capable, All Seeing, and All Hearing. Everything happens by His permission only. No one has any power to benefit or harm us except God. God is Rabb-ul-Aalmeen (Lord of the Worlds). It is God who creates, maintains, and brings all that is in the universe to perfection. God is beyond the imagination of mankind; we can only know or understand Him through His attributes,

2 Angels

Muslims must believe that the angels are one of the creations of God. They are free of needs, wants, and desires, but unlike humans they do not have a free will. They are constantly busy with praising God and carrying out His commands. Angel Gabriel (Jibreel) is the head of all angels and it is he who brought all the revelations to all the prophets (PBUT ALL).

3 Books of God

Muslims must have faith in all the divine books. God kept guiding humanity ever since the first human was sent to earth. His Guidance kept reaching mankind through messengers and books. The book revealed by God during the time of Moses (PBUH) was the Taurat (Torah). David (PBUH) was given the Zabur (Psalms), whereas Jesus (PBUH) was given the Injil (Gospel). The Quran was sent down to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and is the last and final book to be revealed by God for all of humanity. Other prophets were also given books earlier but there is no mention of them in the Quran. A Muslim is supposed to have faith in all the books revealed by God. Since the message of each revealed book has been the same: “There is no God besides the One God.” However, Muslims believe that all earlier books revealed before the Quran have been tampered with, changed, or altered.

4 Prophets of God

Muslims must believe in all the prophets and messengers that God sent to all nations and regions during all times of human existence. The message of all the messengers was to believe and worship One God only. Muslims believe in all the messengers and prophets of God, like Adam Noah, Abraham, David, Solomon, Moses, John, Jesus and Muhammad—peace be upon them all. Quran mentions that God sent messengers and prophets all over the world since arrival of first prophet but the Quran did not mention all of them by name. If someone rejects any of God’s prophets, that person cannot be considered a Muslim.

5 Day of Judgment

Muslims must believe in ultimate Day of Judgment, and a life after death either in heaven or in hell. Every person will face the judgement day, that day a person will be rewarded for accepting God’s guidance and for his good deeds or a person will be punished for rejecting guidance and indulging in evil deeds. This day everyone will be served justice, no one will be wronged, a person will be assigned a place either in Heaven or Hell based on their worldly deeds. Life in the hereafter is eternal. We ask God for Heaven and we seek refuge in Him from Hell.

6 Destiny (Qadar)

Every Muslim must believe that his or her destiny is firmly in the hands of God. The outcome of every intention, action, and effort is subject to the Will of God. It is obligatory upon a person to make a sound choice and strive utmost for the best, but the outcome will be according to the Will of God. God is fully aware of our past, present, and future and all that is apparent and hidden. God Almighty always gives the results that are in the best interest of a person. This faith in destiny protects a person from disappointments and depressions.

No failure, setback, hurdle, or calamity in life should disappoint you to the point that you lose of hope of God’s help. At the same time, no achievement, success, or gain should leads4 one to become proud and arrogant. We must always remember that all gains are from God and are a result of His mercy.

For a person to be a Muslim, it is necessary to believe in all these six articles of faith.
