Many times, people wonder, how great it will be if a person can worship the Lord every moment of life. A Muslim can be in the state of worship every moment of life. This is one of the beauties of Islam amongst the many beauties of Islam. Many people will marvel how is this possible? Well, this is possible in Islam and that is exactly the beauty. So, let’s examine how a person can worship every moment of life.

We have heard the old-time stories of pious and religious people leaving the society and moving into jungles, mountains or secluding themselves into monasteries to worship God, day and night. But in Islam that is not the case….

Allah said in the Quran.

I have perfected your religion for you, and have completed My blessing upon you, and chosen Islam as Deen (religion and a way of life) for you. 5:3

Islam is described in this verse as a complete way of life and a religion; whereby, all acts of life are an opportunity to worship. The concept of worship in Islam is a beautiful and comprehensive concept, it is not just formal rituals only that constitute worship. Everything we do in life falls within boundaries of Islam, every step of life is a part of religion and can be a part of worship.

In Islam there are some primary compulsory rituals like praying, fasting, giving charity or performing pilgrimage are the most important forms of worship, Islam does not end there. Every routine activity of daily life, whether mundane or crucial, whether personal, social, educational, economic or political is the part of the religion and Islam provides detailed guidance on how to conduct all affairs of life. To our surprise and joy these includes all-daily routine activities that a person enjoys doing and get pleasure out of it, like eating, drinking, dressing appropriately, sleeping, gaining knowledge, earning livelihood, getting married, spending money on family, spending time with spouse and kids, maintaining family relations, being active in the society for promoting good and removing evil are part of religion and counted as worship and will be rewarded generously by God provided, they are done as per the guidelines of Islam.

Let us examine a few verses from the Quran and the sayings of prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on this topic. We will study only a few examples from both.

Here are a few verses from the Quran.

Verses for primary compulsory acts.

Establish prayer, pay alms-tax, and bow down with those who bow down. 2:43

[O Muhammad], tell My servants who have believed to establish prayer and spend from what We have provided them, secretly and publicly, before a Day comes in which there will be no exchange, nor any friendships.  14.31

Other aspects of life.

“Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people – and Allah loves the doers of good.” 3:134

Allah loves doers of Good.  (3:134)

Forgive others for their mistakes, enjoin good and turn aside from ignorant.  (7:199)

Treat parents well, whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, don’t say them so much as, “uff,” and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. (17:23)

Think good about others (24:12)

Some of the sayings of prophet Muhammad (PBUH) are like these, and following the advice of prophet is a part of worship.

‘The best of my people is one who displays perfect kindness and goodness to his family.’

“Faith is made of sixty and some branches: the highest of which is the belief in the oneness of Allah (SWT), the lowest in the scale of worship is removing obstacles and dirt from people’s way.”

“Whoever finds himself at the nightfall tired of his (lawful) work, God will forgive his sins.”

“Receiving your friend with a smile is a type of charity, helping a person to load his animal is a charity and putting some water in your neighbor’s bucket is a charity.”

“Whatever one spends for his family is charity, he will be rewarded for it if what he acquires is through permitted means.”

“Kindness to one’s family is worship”.

Thus, looking with love at your parents, helping someone load his weight on an animal, removing a harmful substance from the road, feeding poor, taking care of orphans, dealing well with neighbors whether Muslim or not are parts of worship.

In short Islam does not limit religion to just few rituals but every activity in every part of life at any given time is part worship, provided they are done as per guideline of Islam. This is how a person is state worship at every moment in Islam. What a Merciful God and wonderful religion.
